Baker Chocolate Factory
The Baker Chocolate Factory represents the most historically significant mill in Boston. Sited along the Neponset River in Lower Mills, and surrounded by other historic mill buildings built in the 1800s, most of which were operated by W. Baker & Co., the first chocolate company in the States.
Baker Chocolate Factory is a complex made up of the Pierce Mill (1872), the Adams Street Mill (1888), and the Preston Mill (1903), each designed in unique architectural styles from Second Empire to Romanesque Revival. And each full of character and charm, with classic red brick, iron gates and fixtures, copper bridges, arched windows, mansard roofs, a curved facade, and a dramatic archway into a cobblestone courtyard. All of these elements contribute to its enduring quality and timeless presence.
Wingate Companies acquired the property in late 2024 to become its new steward, and renew its prominence and presence on the corner of Pierce Square.
The repositioned brand looks to the past to inspire its future. The heritage of the building, and the historic brand identity of the Baker company, are translated and reinterpreted for today. Calm and confident storytelling speaks to the real character of the community. Tones of brick red, chocolate brown, and sepia tan evoke warmth and nostalgia for the past. Graphic motifs and imagery, in photography and illustration, convey craftsmanship and authenticity aligned with the architectural significance. Every touchpoint reinforces the brand’s alignment with legacy and landmark status.
The result is a brand that feels of its place. A foundation for Wingate to serve as stewards and build upon their company. An alignment with brand heritage and architectural history while remaining timeless. And a welcoming presence in an evolving neighborhood with real sense of community.
